Hi-Fi Corner is a family business, run by MD Struan Mackenzie and his father, Company Director, Colin. The company has recently moved from their long-established shop in Haddington Place to much larger premises in Joppa, giving them space to create a high quality customer experience that is unrivalled in Scotland and is indeed one of the very best of its type in Europe.
“We needed to offer something different and exciting to compete in the modern age and the constraints of our original store didn’t allow us the flexibility to develop.” – Struan
The move to Portobello represents a significant investment for the company and a bold move at a time when Internet retailing is growing and high street stores are under pressure. Be prepared to be impressed and inspired by the shopping experience at Hi-Fi Corner. Five purpose-built listening rooms have been created to demonstrate how the equipment might look and sound in their clients’ home, including one designed as a ‘garage conversion’ home cinema. I was lucky enough to be given a personal demo of this and it’s a sensational, totally immersive experience. I joked that the only thing missing was the popcorn. Colin told me that he was already working on that.
“Hi-fi equipment has its own personality, every bit sounds different and we are offering a bespoke service.” – Colin
Many brands that Hi-Fi Corner stock are British or designed in Britain. As you enter the store a large digitally-printed wallpaper of Eileen Donan Castle provides the backdrop to the famous Scottish manufacturer, Linn Products. Although best known for their excellent turntables, Linn also make world-class amplifiers, loudspeakers and streamers.
The upper floor is a life-style area designed to demonstrate how you can hide equipment and disguise speakers in walls or ceilings. Further in-store, you will find some of the very best conventional equipment available. Hi-Fi Corner’s style is selling through experience (i.e. demonstration). Many of the products are unique to them, and they have clients coming from all over Scotland and beyond to discover their delights.
The move to Portobello is one that the company is very positive about. Struan knows the area well and is a regular visitor to the beach with his adorable Daschund, Basil. There is no doubt that they are here to stay and Struan is already looking to move here.
“We are really excited about coming to Portobello. It’s a vibrant community and ideal for our colleagues and business.” – Colin
Hi-Fi Corner has a long and impressive record of community engagement and both Colin and Struan are keen to be involved in similar ventures within Portobello.
“It’s important to give something back. We are happy to discuss ideas for promoting the arts, especially music. We have a great space and would like to collaborate with other businesses in hosting events. As we attract people from far and wide we want to showcase this community on our website and to offer recommendations for eating, sleeping and visiting. This is all about providing a total client experience.” – Struan
Portobello Online is proud to be associated with Hi-Fi Corner, their business is a great addition to the High Street shopping experience and we wish them well for the future.
